In January, I was contacted by a "Frank Joe" about purchasing my lovely mare HOF Gallant Wonder. His email was OBVIOUSLY one of those Nigerian scams. So being bored and creative, I decided to continue the dialogue with him to see how far he would carry the RL purhase of my SIM mare. Below are the copy and pasted pieces from the HF board for our entertainment as I reported each part of the email conversation with our friend Frank.
The first email I received:
Here is my first reply to him:
Now if the picture that I sent stops working sometime for any reason, it is actually a picture of a grey Lusitano Breyer horse (toy) exhibiting the lovely Lusitano gait. Someone had done a nice job with the background, and if you looked at it really small or just a glance, you might think the horse was real. However, the mare he is trying to purchase from me is a Bay Thoroughbred. The age that I gave him (1964) puts my mare at 44 years old. Oh, and her condition, if you look it up in the dictionary, refers to "being like a prostitute." Of course, I added the "nessitis" to the end of the word.
His next response. He obviously didn't even read the information I wrote, and thought he had another sucker for his scam. Notice the copy and paste quality of his email?
My response. Yes, I know his name is "Frank" and sled dogs in Alaska don't have thorns in their paws in the middle of a blizzard. But does he?
Note the desperation for me to succumb to his scam. He NEEDS the money now, and orders me to send my information.
My reply:
Unfortunately I must have said SOMETHING that tipped him off that I was on to him. Could it have been the picture of the Breyer? The competely wrong and contradictory geography? Or maybe he ignorantly didn't catch any of those at all; maybe I was just taking too much time to send my information. Either way, I never heard from him again. Ah well, maybe next time.
Last note: I've attached a picture of the Breyer that I sent him.

Hi Frank Joe,
I am flattered that you are interested in my mare even though she is not for sale. She is a wonderful specimen of the breed, and has won numerous breed classes. What would your plans be for her? It is required that she go to a home who knows how to care for her special needs, as she does has a condition called meretriciousnessitis. It's easily researched and can work with your local vet for monthly care. Even so, she is still a sweet horse with many good years left in her. She is a 1964 Bay Thorougbred mare. I'm curious, where did you hear of her?
I have enclosed a picture of her, even though it's slightly older and when she was still competing in western pleasure, park, and steeplechasing.

Seeing as she has great bloodlines and a show record, I am asking $7,000 for her which is a great deal. Where do you live? She has an issue with being transported in certain trailers, so the Breyer Silverado edition of a three horse sland load with extra padding and shavings inside will do just fine for her. I'm sure you could easily pick one up at your nearest dealership if you don't already have one. She could probably still give you one or two foals, which we had planned to do.

Hi Joe,
Wow, I'm impressed you contacted me so quickly! You must really want my 1964 bay Thoroughbred mare badly. Before we go ahead with all the transactions and such, I want to be sure you know what it means to have to deal with her special condition, meretriciousnessitis. Please confirm to me that your client in the USA has consulted with their vet and know what it entails to care for a mare with such a special condition.
Unfortunately we can't deal with cash or check because we live in such rural Alaska. My main sled dog is limping right now from a thorn in his paw, so we don't have a mode of transportation until this blizzard clears up a bit, or my dog is better. So it won't do him any good to send the money order quite yet, and he might need the extra cash around with all the upcoming elections and such. Whereabouts in the USA will HOF Gallant Wonder be sent to? I really want to make sure they have the special Breyer-style trailer, as well. That's the only kind that she will load in.
Also, I can't really put "SOLD" on the advert because there wasn't any advert in the first place, and she wasn't for sale originally. But you sounded like you really liked her despite her special needs, and you're really trying to do a good thing for your client. Did your client see her picture? She's an excellent example of her breed, and they should be well pleased. Please let me know what they thought of her. Also, you stated you hoped everything is clear, but you said shortly before that: "i will be willing to compensate you with $200 ,so your total deduction will be $7,200." I certainly hope you don't MEAN deduction, because I am not going to PAY you to take my mare who wasn't for sale to begin with...Freudian slip, perhaps? I hope you can clear that up a bit.
Thank you for replying, have a nice day,

My reply:
Hey Joe,
I'm not sure you understood what I meant when I said that I cannot get out of my house right now because of this terrible blizzard. The man on the news says it won't clear up for at least a week, so even if your client wanted to send his money order or check to me, it won't even reach me for at least two weeks. Do you deal through PayPal at all? That would be quicker. You could also just pay me outright without having the whole snail mail/money order issue to deal with. Which would be nice for everyone!
I know you say that your shipper will talk to the vet, that's not good enough at the moment. I REALLY need to know that they know how to care for this special condition. My mare isn't going anywhere, so we can wait until you give me confirmation or better yet, your USA client's number so that I can be sure my mare is going to a home well-prepared to deal with her issues. I also would like to know if she is going to a colder climate, as she is getting up in age and can only live in a warm environment. That is partially why we live next to the Alaskan coast. Well, that and she can only eat Seaguns because of her condition, instead of hay. Don't you think I would be an irresponsible owner if I didn't ask questions about her new home first? I'm sure YOU wouldn't do that to your own animals, correct? Also, did your client like the picture of my mare? He would at least look at a picture of the mare before purchasing her, right? What did he think of her?
Thank you,
C&H Ranch
