BREED PROFILE: SELLE FRANÇAIS
BY ROSEBUD
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
The Selle Français Breeders Society bases it's description of the breed on five key-words: ELEGANCE, POWER, BALANCE, CAREFULNESS and CLEVERNESS. These five characteristics sums the breed up well as they are known for having a sturdy build with strong legs, backs, and hindquarters(POWER and BALANCE), and being incredibly athletic with lots of scope(CAREFULNESS). They also are said to have a long, classy head and neck(ELEGANCE), along with an intelligent and willing temperament(CLEVERNESS).
Selle Français, on average, stand between 16.0hh and 17.0hh, and are predominantly chestnut or bay in color with colors such as black and gray being common also.
HISTORY
The breed originated in France, more specifically in Normandy, with the crossbreeding of Norman mares to Norfolk Trotter, Thoroughbred, and Arabian stallions producing the Anglo-Norman, a breed meant to be ridden. These Anglo-Normans were, essentially, the beginnings of the Selle Français. From then on they were bred, and crossed, with Thoroughbreds and Warmbloods in the pursuit of perfect sport horse.
THE BREED TODAY:
Today, the Selle Français is world renowned for being extraordinarily talented jumping horses. Though also skilled in dressage and eventing, their true ability lies in the jumper ring, and more recently the hunter ring. With hunters being largely an American phenomena and historically dominated by Thoroughbreds, it is a newer discipline for the Selle Français, but their willingness and elegance are leading them to performing increasingly well in this discipline.
NOTABLE BLOODLINES & HORSES:
One of the most influential stallions in Holsteiner bloodlines today and modern warmbloods in general, COR DE LA BRYERE, was in fact, a Selle Français. His sire, RANTZAU, was a Thoroughbred and his dam, QUENOTTO B, was a great granddaughter of the famous FURIOSO. FURIOSO was a Thoroughbred stallion who had a great impact on the Selle Français breed, passing on his jumping ability.
ALME is another famous name in Selle Français breeding. He sired I LOVE YOU, a World Cup winner and 1983 USA Showjumper Horse of the Year. He also sired, GALOUBET A, most notably known for his son, BALOUBET DU ROUET, three time World Cup Finals winner and Bronze medalist at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
These are just a few of the more familiar Selle Français lines.
