HFTRA SEPTEMBER: Popular Bloodlines
This month we're going to give you only a few of the more popular bloodlines in modern Thoroughbreds. Please keep in mind that these are stallions that I personally find influential to Thoroughbred breeding today, and only a few of them. The stallions included this month are stallions who currently stand for stud and have offspring on the track.
A.P. Indy -- A.P. Indy is a two-time leading sire and currently holds that position for 2007. He had a very successful racing career; multiple graded stakes wins, millions in earnings, and the Horse of the Year honor his three-year old season. His currently racing offspring include Rags to Riches, Majestic Warrior, Master Command, and Teammate. His colts standing at stud include Bernardini (freshman sire) and Aptitude (sire of Great Hunter and Steppenwolfer). His is also the top 20 broodmare sire of Bluegrass Cat and Any Given Saturday.
Giant's Causeway -- Giant's Causeway is acclaimed as the "best young sire in the world." He was the #3 sire last year and is currently the #4 sire for 2007. His currently racing offspring include My Typhoon and Fairbanks; his other offspring include Aragorn and First Samurai. He is definitely one of the most sought-after studs today; in 2007 he already has 233 runners, 97 of them winners.
Unbridled's Song -- Most, if not all, of you should have heard of this stallion. He is currently ranked #14 as the sire of Octave and Political Force. Some of his most successful runners include Unbridled Elaine, Even the Score, and Eurosilver.
Rahy -- Rahy is not a "leading" sire, but he has sired some of the best racehorses of recent years. He is the sire of Dreaming of Anna, Fantastic Light, Serena's Song, and Tates Creek. His top 10 lifetime earners have all earned more than $1.4 million. He is a top 10 broodmare sire of After Market and Giant's Causeway.
Storm Cat -- At 24 years old, Storm Cat is still one of the most influential sires Thoroughbred racing has seen. His stud fee is $500,000, and for good reason -- his leading lifetime earners include Cat Thief, Giant's Causeway, Tabasco Cat, Storm Flag Flying, and Bluegrass Cat. He is also the #4 broodmare sire of Nobiz Like Shobiz and Meisho Bowler.
El Prado -- El Prado is a stallion that has not gotten a lot of attention (not like A.P. Indy or Storm Cat), but he is, in my mind, one of the top sires today. His top lifetime earners include Medaglia d'Oro , Artie Schiller, Kitten's Joy, Borrego, and Asi Siempre.
